If you have to use the English language at work or plan to apply for positions that have that as a requirement, we can work on specific situations you might go through such as meetings, writing professional emails, presentations, reading graphs, and other topics. Your current language level doesn’t matter because we will also cover grammar content and conversation; the difference is that we can do it with materials and vocabulary related to your professional life.
You might be interested in studying or working at a Portuguese-speaking university or giving a paper at a conference in Brazil. In that case, we can study academic texts and situations such as abstracts, articles, presentations, etc.
If your interest is in studying the Portuguese language in general, without a specific focus, we can work on it as a whole, discussing several different subjects and studying content suitable to your language level. The lessons might be about topics related to your interests.
My teaching approach is always conversational, but it can be focused almost exclusively on that if you are already an intermediate or advanced English learner and that is your will. These lessons are equally prepared in advance, and we will also work on grammar content when necessary, but more briefly.

If you plan to register at a university where lessons and research will be conducted in English, you must take a proficiency exam. There are several tests, and each institution requires one. I have experience with TOEFL-iBT, which is widely accepted in many countries. If you are applying for (post-)graduate school, even at a Brazilian institution, it is generally necessary to prove proficiency in an additional language. I can help you prepare for those tests.

If you plan to travel to Brazil, our lessons can prepare you for that. A few examples of class themes might be making a reservation, communicating during the trip, and talking to people in different situations once at your destination.
During my graduate studies I specialized in literatures in English, as a researcher and an instructor. We can read and discuss books in English if that is your interest. We will also study the language through the chosen texts.

Portuguese

You might be married or in a relationship with a Brazilian. I can help you learn Portuguese to communicate with your partner’s family and friends. You can also study with me if you have Brazilian relatives and are interested in learning Portuguese to communicate with them–even if you are a beginner.

People raised by Brazilian parents outside of Brazil who speak Portuguese with their families are called “heritage speakers.” In such cases, it is common to find writing more difficult than speaking or to understand very well what others say while having difficulties with speaking. I can help you develop your Portuguese skills to use it in contexts besides the familial.

To study in Brazilian (and a few Portuguese) universities or to obtain Brazilian citizenship, it is necessary to take Celpe-Bras, the Brazilian Portuguese proficiency test. If that is your case, I can help you prepare for this exam.
