Yes, you can. It is never too late to start learning a language. I’ve started teaching many students from scratch until they reached their goals. The student range I work with is from teenagers to seniors.
Although many language courses promise fluency in a certain amount of time, it isn`t as simple. It depends on several factors such as your current level in the language you want to learn, the time you have available to dedicate to study it, and even your experience with learning other languages.
It is a common feeling, especially when we go back to studying after a while. I believe the learning environment should be welcoming, and I do my best for my students to feel the most comfortable possible, taking their abilities into account and respecting their differences.
My Portuguese lessons have a focus on Brazilian Portuguese. We can eventually discuss how the language can be different in Brazil, Portugal, and other lusophone countries, but my specialty is Brazilian Portuguese. Regarding English, I have experience with North-American (US and Canada) and British (England) English, but we can eventually discuss the differences that the language presents in other places as well.
The Portuguese lessons are in Portuguese, and the English lessons, are in English. For beginners, we can use another language that we have in common for explanations and questions. When possible, I also make comparisons between languages to help students understand content and vocabulary.
They can be an hour or an hour and a half long, depending on our availability and on how many lessons a week you plan to take.
The lessons are all online and synchronous/live, on Microsoft Teams. If you already use Google Meet, Zoom, or Skype, we might also use one of these platforms.
You should take at least an hour lesson once a week. Less than that won’t be productive. I don’t recommend you take many lessons a week because it is important that besides the classes, you have time to study on your own. This moment of individual study is important to consolidate what we’ve worked on during class.
It depends on how long you have available. The ideal scenario would be to study a little bit every day, but if that is not possible, you can take some time for that at least once a week. It is also important that you have contact with the Portuguese/English language in a fun way: watching series or films, listening to music or podcasts, or reading books, magazines, or the news.
To avoid misunderstandings, we should have a fixed day and time for the lessons.
Yes, you can, as long as you inform me of your need to reschedule at least 24 hours prior to the lesson time. If you let me know after that, the lessons will be considered given and charged. For me to offer you a new day and time, I need time; I often have to reach out to students in other time zones, and to do this I need time. Health issues are handled separately.
There is no need to buy materials as I will provide the ones we’re going to use digitally. If you want to purchase hard copies, I have recommendations for you, but it isn’t necessary.
Payments can be made in BRL, USD, CAD, or EUR, by depositing into accounts in the respective currencies, by bank transfer, PIX, or by a wire transfer such as Wise. PayPal is also possible, but it will have extra fees.
